The explanation they offered was poetic, but the recognition underneath it was accurate: this is not an ordinary object.
Rome used it for intaglios and cameos — the hardness and clarity made it ideal for fine detail work. Roman elites also carried quartz spheres for cooling their hands in summer, a practical use that speaks to how physically immediate their relationship with the stone was.
Medieval Europe called it Cristallo and placed it at the centers of royal scepters, reliquaries, and ceremonial objects. Its presence in sacred contexts across cultures was not coincidence — it was the visual language of purity, of having nothing to conceal.
